Taking it to the limit.

I was up the U.P. of Michigan this past saturday doing a 50kilometer cross country ski race.  We started in Ishpeming and  skied across lakes, hills, and valleys down to the dome at Northern Michigan University in Marquette Michigan.  Duane Lee, Tom Krenz, Ron Raymond, Dave and Melissa Leske participated in the race.

We woke up to 6-8 inches of fresh lake effect snow.  It was absolutely incredible to see a winter wonderland compared to what we have had for snow this year.  In 25 years of cross country skiing I have only done one other race where their was signifigant snow and that was the 1991 birkie.

The Noquemonen cross country ski race is a very challenging course and as we got to the woods they had not groomed and I knew it was going to be a slow race so just get your stride and enjoy the beauty of the day

All spent after taking it to the limit.

At the 15kilometer mark I was thinking how am I going to make another 35 kilometers?

Once I got to the half way point their was a fairly lengthy downhill section where you could rest a bit and that helped.  With 10kilometers to go you could see the electric plant smoke stacks and I knew I could make it then. As we all got closer to Marquette where the finish was the snow got less and less and basically the last 7 kilometers their wasn’t much of a track to ski and a lot of rocks and debris was on the course which you were trying to avoid those while still keeping upright totally exhausted.

I must have taken 8 energy goo packs and a bunch of energy drink and water to fuel my system.  It was instant energy for your fatiguing muscles.  It’s really the only time you ever need those type of sugars is when you have exhausted your glycogen storages.

Three hours and 47 minutes it took to do this race and I was very happy with my effort.  Everyone looked pretty depleted at the finish line.  Thank God for the NMU dome and hot showers, massages, and great food after the race to warm the body, feed my muscles, and start the recovery process.

It’s incredible what one’s body can do.  Skiing in 6-8 inches of fresh powder for over 30 miles is taxing.  Your mindset has to be spot on.  Your focus has to be one kick and glide at a time.  You have to be patient since this is a process.  It sounds a lot like life. Ups and downs along the way but if you just hang in there and perservere you can do anything.

If you have a goal of doing something then get a mentor to assist you along the way.  I’m doing a lot of weight loss with people right now at our clinic.  The first thing we focus on is getting them healthy first.  Once they start getting healthy then the weight falls off.  Patience is key with weight loss.  It’s a process just like a long cross country ski race.  A lot of work goes into the process so you can reap the rewards later.

I love to stretch myself.  I love to see patients take full responsibility for their health and rise to the occasion and get healthy once and for all.  It’s amazing what your mindbody can do if you just start the process going.  When I started cross country skiing 25 years ago I had no idea I would have done over 150 races, 2o Birkies, and meet hundreds of incredible people, and allowed me to take care of three Olympic cross country skiers.  What a cool journey.  Until next time, take that first step to to maximizing your life.  I can’t wait to hear about your journey!  Dr. E
