Staying the Course

Pool will be open in 6 months.

Mary, Riley, and I got back late Sunday from our 4 day trip to Florida.  It was perfect weather and now look what we have.

I was frantically getting everything put away Sunday night and sure enough I thought I’d only miss a few minutes of the Packer game and it was already 35 to nothing when I got back inside.  I’m sure glad I got all my stuff done because it would have been a bit of a disaster trying to get the golf cart, basketball hoop, and lawnmower in on Monday morning.

I love the first snowfall.  It’s always a bit hard for me to sleep as I’m waiting best I can for the big snowfall to hit.  Is school going to be closed, will patients make it in, will my rear drive Cadillac make it to the clinic and back without getting stuck?  Those are just some of the thoughts that passed my mind.  Some other fun thoughts were “I hope we get enough snow so I can get the cross country ski’s out”.  Well we have enough snow that I’ll adventure out to Rock Creek Farm and try my luck for a few hours.  It should be beautiful out there.  Now I need to grow the big white beard so I don’t freeze my face.

I’ve put in quite a few hours rollerskiing to get and keep in shape so I can compete and finish my 24th Birkie.  It’s incredible how fast time has gone by since I started cross country skiing.  I did it on a whim not even knowing how to ski but I needed something to do if I was going to relocate back here from Arizona.  Well it has changed my life.  I’ve always been into fitness and x-skiing didn’t beat my body up.  It felt and still feels like it builds my mind and body up.  I go out on a day like today and it’s nothing but a positive experience.  Positive experiences are anti-inflammatory to the brain and body.  That’s why vacations even for a few days are good for you.  They get you to stop and smell the roses.  Your body and mind can get into a bit of a recovery mode and you can balance out physiology.  One thing I am going to start doing is taking breaks more periodically.  It’s just something we should all do if you can swing it.

I’ve been practicing Chiropractic and cross country skiing for 28 years.  There had been times where I was fed up with  both and could have just quit. I’m sure we all have times like that.  I stayed the course through thick and thin.  Kind of like marriage, kids, and anything that you really value.  I’m asking all of you to stay the course with your health.  For some of you it has taken years for you to lose your health.  It ‘s going to to take time to get it back.  Be patient with your healing process, especially if it’s radical changes with your diet and exercise routine.  These can be tough for some and while most see great progress in weeks to months, some take longer.  Everyone is different.  It will all pay off in the long time.  Some quit right when they are ready to start seeing results.  I guess it’s like anyting in life.  I always encourage all the athletes I’ve worked with over the past 35 years to stick it out.  Even my own kids at times have felt like quitting.  I even hated my freshman year at the U. of Minnesota while playing football and I was starting.  I just couldn’t take the stress.  A reassurring phone call from mom and dad made all the difference in the world.  If you need to pick up the phone and give me a hollar I’m here for you.  Stay the course of being healthier in every way you can and watch the quality of your life improve over time.

Congrats to all our athletes who participated in fall sports, now it’s on to winter sports.

The keys to success in life.

Confuscious said the key to success in life is “when you fall down 8 times, you get up 9 times”.

Most people quit things after the 3rd or 4th fall and make more excuses.

Just hang in there and keep moving forward inspite of all the obstacles..

That is why I love sports so much because you can have failure one second and success the next and you just don’t know when either of them is going to happen.

In baseball you can strike out 7 out of 10 times and still be an all-star batting 300.

In football you can fumble one time and then score a touchdown the next.

You just don’t know in life.  You just have to keep being positive just when you think everything and everyone else is coming down on you.

It’s all about the opportunity to do your best.  When you get your shot take advantage of it, even if you fall on your face just get back up and keep going.  Don’t let anyone keep you down.

I say this because of my own challenges in sports, marriage, kids, my practice, it’s always something.

We all have challenges, also known as opportunities.  It’s how you look at it.  Now I can get down and out sometimes but not for long because I know bad times are fleeting and good times lie ahead.

Go out today and do something different something that uplifts you and moves you in a positive way.

The Osceola Chiefs won on Saturday down in Durand 35-14.  We had to play Saturday to give Durand another day of practice. The poor school had a bad food poisoning and the whole school was affected.  It was their first game in 3 weeks.

We are now playoff eligible so it’s exciting times for the boys.  Come cheer the boys on this friday night as we take on Ellsworth in the final home game of the year.

A little bump in the road called life.

We all have times in our lives where things just don’t go the way we want them to.

It could be with our family life, our health, finances, relationships, you name it it can happen any time and any place.

My son Riley and all the Osceola Chieftain football players took it on the chin last friday down in Somerset.  It was a total spanking.

While they just got dominated by a superior team they now get the opportunity to play 6 more games and have a great season.  It’s all about how you approach it with your attitude and then taking action.

The Chiefs can mope around and feel sorry for themselves and have a poor practice week or they can learn to get better, work hard, build each other up and come together as a team and have fun doing it.

One play at a time.

Lombardi said winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.  Well I love to win as much as any one, but there is something positive that can come out of a blow out.  Those young athletes get to figure that out this week at practice and then be ready to bring friday night against Baldwin.

If you have poor health you can’t reflect on the past, you must get knowledge and then take action with your new found knowledge.  I help many people with chronic health conditions.  If they follow my lead with the knowledge I teach them, chnge their diet, and manange their stress they can get big time results.  If they don’t take action then nothing changes and they will just get sicker with time.

Most americans won’t do anyting about their health until a crisis develops.  You really want to be pro-active daily with how you think, eat, and move your body.

Being healthy doesn’t have to be that hard.  Americans just have to get out of the way of their poor health choices and start making better ones.

Well we are going to get our first big  cold spell of the season.  Fifty five sounds chilly for friday nights football game.  Six months from now that will sound hot!

Adapting to change whether it be weather, diet, exercise, does take a little bit of getting used to.  As long as you are moving forward in a positive way it’s all good!!

Life is a marathoon, not a sprint.  The same with your health so take it day to day and be patient with your self and your health results.  The little things daily make the difference.

Heat, Humidity, and Cramps!

Boy it has been strange weather this past week. No sunshine for 4 days and high humidity.  Our Air Conditioner went out that cools the whole house and it was a stinker trying to sleep when you are dripping wet and irt’s 85 in the house and no breeze.  I can’t imagine how the people down south live without air conditioning.

I like the heat but I’m not a huge fan of humidity.

Make sure you hydrate and eat lots of good foods when it’s hot and humid out.  You should try to get 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water intake.  I’ve been preaching the the high school football team the importance of hydrating so they don’t cramp up.  You have to do it the whole week, not just gameday.  Sure enough, we had some cramping issues friday night.  Cramps are generally very preventable.  It all comes down to nutrition and hydration.  If you skip breakfast, have a coffee and hit the road then you are more than likely going to have some cramping issues if you are active outside.  I remember one Birkie I cramped so severely I had to get an I.V. afterwards.  I couldn’t walk.  That was 15 years ago and haven’t had an issue with them since.  I used to fear getting cramps in my quads or calfs with 10 km to go in the Birkie but now I may get a slight one near the finish line or after.  They are really painful.  Football seems to bring the cramps out in everyone.  Drink, and eat mineral filled foods like veggies and fruits.  I use Magnesium and pink salt for those that have a tendency to get cramps if normal hydration doesn’t seem to do the trick.

The Chieftains had their first football game friday night and beat my alma mater handily 36-0.  We just had to much speed and size for the Saints.  It was fun to see a great crowd and I saw my old football coach Keith O’Donnell and old basketball coach Ron Greenquist on the sidelines.  They are both Wisconsin Hall of fame football coaches and were really great coaches and fantastic people.

I tell my son Riley to listen to his coaches.  They have pearls of wisdom not only about football but life.  That’s one of the coolest thigns about sports is it’s a lot like life.  You have highs and you have lows.  You generally aren’t at either extreme to long so just hang in there and work hard and good things will happen.    We all have challenges.  That’s life.  If you have a health issue that’s where I come in to play.  While I don’t have all the answers, I will do whatever I can do assist you in your health and well-being so you can live a substationally better quality of life.

What do Acorns have in common with your health?

Another fast summer week and it just seems to go faster and faster.  School is fast approaching and the sumac is already changed.  Every year it just goes faster and faster.  The only thing that seems to go slow is the NFL pre-season.  To me that seems like the longest 6 weeks ever.  Lets just get to the first real game.

Yes it’s true, the Acorns are falling.  I sat and watched 3 squirrels pick up 50 or so acorns yesterday afternoon.  They are already storing food for the winter.  No carbs in the nuts.  That’s a great source of energy that will have lasting power for them to get through the winter.  We Americans eat way to many carbs which only last a short period of time.  If we don’t use them then our body converts it to the bad form of fat and will really screw with your physiology.  Keep putting good things in and good things will come back out for you.  Be patient when you want to make changes with your health.  Keep the discipline and stick to the process of eating, moving, and thinking better.

As I was in amazement watching the squirrels yesterday eat those acorns it is amazing how one acorn can eventually grow to be a giant oak tree.  I went up and pushed the oak tree and gave it a big hug.  it will probably live longer than me and it’s probably already 70 years old or so.  That tree needed plenty of sunlight and water to nuture it and make it grow to a 60 foot tree.  What would have happened if the tree didn’t get enough sunlight or water?  It would probably just die in time.  The same with our body.  It needs good water, good food, good fresh air, goood sunlight, and we need to be nurtured.  If we don’t get these we end up eventually and probably prematurely getting some form of sickness or disease that takes us from living the life we want to.

Being healthy doesn’t have to be that hard.  We just have to get out of the way of all the intereference we create for ourselves.

Ok, Osceola Chieftains have their first football game friday night against my alma mater, St. Croix Falls.  I think we will be pretty tough and competitive in our conference.  The boys seem to get along well and they work hard.

Make sure you keep hydrated daily.  You should try to get 1/2 your body weight in ounces.  It’s going to get hot by the end of the week so it’s not jsut the athletes that need to hydrate.

This works great for knee problems.

What a fun filled weekend it was for me.  It seems like August is a time of month to get as many fun things done as possible before the weather starts changing.

Friday night I went to the Raiders-Vikings game at TCF bank stadium on the U. of M. campus.  What a great place to enjoy a football game.

Pre-season games typically aren’t that good.  Usually reserves trying to make the team get to play and the top players are generally held out or only play a quarter.

I do enjoy seeing players get there chance and then taking advantage of it.  Adam Thielen who played at Mankato State had a stellar game for the Vikis friday night.  He ran a punt back 40 yards and made a great tackle on special teams.  While he is a long shot at making the team he sure looked impressive as he was staying in the moment of the game and bringing it big time.

If everyone on the vikes brought it like that kid did they would be unstoppable.   Lets see how the QB situation plays out.  I’d go with the rookie Teddy Bridgewater.  Throw him in there and see what he can do.

The magic starts friday August 22 at OHS field

My neighbor Steph Nelson got married this weekend and it was awesome to see her so beautiful and so happy.  What an incredible moment for her and Brandon and all her friends and Family.

I also played in the Parsons electric annual golf tournament on sunday.  It’s my buddies from high school Mike Northquest, Jeff Erickson, and Jeff Parks.  We had so much fun and even tied for first place at 10 under.

These fun summer weekends are awesome, especially with the nice weather we have been having.  Get out and enjoy it because we all know what’s right around the corner.

So I’ve been dinged up for about 10 days now with my right knee.  I had just been over doing it and and it flared up playing baseball.  It gets swollen and then I lose strength and range of motion and it leaves me gimping around . When you can’t do what you want to do it sure isn’t fun.  It’s getting better everyday since I’ve been doing what it takes to get the swelling down and improve range of motion, then start getting the strength and stability back in it.  The ARP machine works wonders at getting the swelling off the knee and improves circulation so range of motion can improve.  It’s incredible how fast the muscles shut down once you have an injury.  It’s so important to start the rehab process immediately.  Sitting around and hoping things get better just isn’t going to do it.  The pain may go away but you really neeed to get full fucntion back in to whatever area the problem is.  Then you also need to re-condition the whole body, especially if you have been layed up for a bit.  This has been a good reality check for me to help me understand what patients go through when they are hurting. One thing I really promote is the benefit of regualr chiropractic adjustments.  I’ve got a new intern here at our office, his name is Steve Siqueiros.  He will be with me until mid November when he graduates forom Chiro school.  It’s going to be great getting more htan my weekly adjsutments.  I work out pretty hard and my body and mind need a recovery and adjustments help me so much with this plus overall energy and well-being.  Steve  is from St. Croix Falls and has played for the Osceola Braves and now plays for the St. Croix River Bandits in baseball.

What’s the best diet for weight loss?

I was just asked this question a few hours ago and thought it is an appropriate question for most people since if one is asking it I’m sure their are others.

Here is the best way to lose weight.

Cut the carbs and eat more good sources of fat!

The bad carbs are anyhting that is processed, and high fructose corn syrup is the #1 worst carb for you.  It throws your blood sugar in disarray and will add weight to you big time.

You want to add fats to your diet.  These will leave you feeling full and cut any of the sugar cravings.

Enjoy the beauty of summer.

Here are some of the good sources of fats.

Avocado’s.

Coconut oil, coconut milk.

Olive oils,

Fish oils,

Organic grass fed beef, chicken, and fish are excellent source of fats and proteins.

Start your breakfast out with these types of good fats and add some veggies for breakfast, it’ not that hard to do.  Doing this will help decrease the stress on your adrenal glands which play a huge role in losing weight and being healthy.  If your adrenals are stressed you won’t lose weight so you need to heal your adrenals.

Chronic stress over time is what throws the adrenals and other hormones off and gives you that bloaty belly fat around your waist which will leave you frustrated and fatigued.

Snacks between meals ok.  Just have some protein with your meals and don’t be afraid to add veggies.

Don’t over do it on fruits.  You need to add fat and proteins.  Keep your fruit to berries and stone fruits which are fruits with pits in them.  Examples are peaches and cherries which are great this summer.

So what’s missing?  Gluten(grains), dairy, soy, egg, and yeast.  These are all inflammatory foods which are hard on your gut and immune system and can dysregulate your blood sugar also.

An anti-inflammatory diet is the way to go.

You will feel much better, control the cravings and with time as your body changes you will lose weight.

This anti-inflammatory diet is excellent for detox pathways also.

OK, high school sports start today.  I always say a prayer for the coaches, student athletes, and parents.  Sports are incredible for kids since it can change their lives in so many positive ways.  It teaches team building, and these kids can be role models for younger kids and other high school kids.

Extracurricular activites are wonderful for kids.  They are also great for parents since we get to cheer our children.  Coaches are dedicated to these kids and always are looking out for the best interest with our kids.

It’s going to be a fun season and I can’t wait for the first games ot start.

This is Mary and myslef’s last season of high school for our son Riley.  It’s really kind of bitter sweet.  I’ll be sad when it’s done but that’s life.  You just have to move forward to the next adventure.

If you can get out and cheer these kids on they will truly appreciate it and you’ll probably enjoy yourself.

OK, it’s already August!  Wow, summer is flying fast.  The braves played there last home game friday night.  good luck to the Bravees and the St. Croix River Bandits who start baseball playoffs this weekend.

The Last Camp

This past weekend was the last camp Mary and I will ever bring our son Rileyto.  What a fun filled process it has been.  It seems like we just started all the camps and activities with our kids and now Riley is a week away from his last football season and his senior year.

We were down at the Jeff Trickey-Randy Wright football camp for Quarterbacks and Receivers.  It was an outstanding camp and they really worked the boys on technique.  The best thing I liked about the camp was the emphasis on being a leader and having and building your character.

As parents we are always preaching that to our kids but it was great to have the kids hear it from someone else.  These camps have priceless pearls of wisdom not only on football but on life.  That’s what I love about sports.  It’s a lot like life.  You will have many ups and downs. It’s about not looking back but staying in the movement and moving forward with each and every day.

The discipline sports demand are something I think are so valuable for our kids.  As adults it would be nice to have camps that trained your body and mind like these sports camps.  I guess we are kind of on our own to make it happen. I’ve been to many camps myself as a kid and watching my kids at camps and it’s interesting how focused and driven these kids were.  They were so attentive, worked their tails off, and were all very respectful.  Some of it may be because they were mostly juniors and seniors in high school and were more mature, but also these young athletes are looking toward bettering themselves with the hope of playing college football.

This camp was on the facilities at Coe College in Cedar Rapids Iowa.  What a beautiful campus.  Cedar Rapids seems to be an industrial blue collar type of city.  It’s interesting to see how many private small colleges there are in Iowa.  I’ve only been through Iowa a handful of times but there are some beautiful areas.  The corn must be 8 feet tall right now!!

One of the things they emphasised at the camp was the importance of getting enough sleep.  I’ve been preaching good nutrtion and good sleep  for years for the athletes I work with and all my patients.  This is when your body recovers, your brain recharges, and your hormones get balanced out and get you ready for a new day.  If you aren’t geting enough sleep you sare stressing your brain, your adrenals and will create a breakdown in your body-mind.  You will be more likely to get injured and not be able to compete like you want or lose weight like you may want to or just be healthy like you should be.  If you have a chance for a nap go ahead and take one too.

I want to share what I do in the morning for breakfast.  What I like to do on M,W, and fridays is get my nutra-bullet out and put all my supplements in there with a scoop of either clearvite which is a rice based protein powder or sometimes I’ll do the whey based protein.  I then add my favorite fruit, ususally a handful of blue berries, a scoop of greens or a handfull of blueberries and let the nutra bullet do it’s thing. You can add some coconut oil in there also, just a teaspoon and this helps emulsify your greens and allows for better absorbtion of your vitamins and minerals.  Try some spinach or kale leaves or kale leaves also.

Another great smootie I love is a handful of ice with 6 ounces water, add 4 ounces coconut milk, and one avocado and mix in nutrabullet.  Try it, I’m sure you will love it!!  It’s called a shamrock shake and it’s yummy yummy!!

I also like to do a quick 4 minutes of weight bearing exercises to stimulate my fat burning metabolism and then follow it with a shake. It’s very simple and easy great way to start your day.

Remember to not focus on yesterday but rather to stay in the moment of today.  Do this with how you eat, think, and move and you’ll be way ahead of the game called life.

It doesn’t get much better.

Summer is really the time of the year I enjoy because of the weather.  We folk up here love our four seasons and although we may bitch about the winter and the extremem cold we are very proud of our winters.  This past weekend was one of those remarkable summer weekends you can look back on when it’s 20 below in the winter.

I went down to the North South Shrine All-Star foootball game Saturday in Oshkosh to watch two of my patients play for the North team.  Mark Johnson from Osceola and Travis Shackelton from Baldwin Woodville played.  They both had outstanding games.  I’m very proud of them.  Mark will be going to UWRF and Travis to Stout to go to school and play football.

It was 34 years ago since I played in that game and I hadn’t been over there since then.  Interesting how some things had changed while others hadn’t changed a bit.  The campus is quite nice.  It’s a long drive to Oshkosh and back but it allowed Tucker Hazzard and I to visit two different campuses.  We stopped at UW-Stevens Point which is a very nice enviromentally friendly campus.  It had been 35 years since I’ve been to that campus and I was impressed  how clean and friendly it was.  I think the UW system is an excellent choice for our young graduating high school students to attend one of these fine institutions.

Summer is halfway done.  We are just a little over 30 days from the first high school football game, the NFL camps start this week.  It’s my favorite time of the year when football comes around.  I’m going to enjoy the hot weather for now but my favorite season is the fall when temps are perfect to workout in and the feel of football in the air is what I love.

Good  idea to get your kids in for a good spine and extremity check up before the fall sports start.  Once they start they put a lot on load on these kids and sometimes their bodies start breaking down.  Adjustments help decrease the load and allow for better recovery.  I’ve helped keep a lot of athletes going over the years and I love working with these kids in keeping them on the field.  Symptoms are generally the last thing to come on and if you can see a dysfunctional movement pattern or a restriction in joint motion and catch it early you can prevent a lot problems from developing down the road.

Remember to keep the diet clean.  A anti-inflammatory diet consisting of tons of vegtables, good fruits, and organic beef, chicken or fish is excellent.  I love adding coconut oil to the diet also.  Good fats are crucial for your body.  Fats like avocados are great.  Try one in a smoothie, it’s fantastic.  Another thing we do at home is have a big glass container of a gallon water, and then we cut up a bunch of limes and put in there with just a little teaspoon of grade A organic maple syrup for flavoring.  Just sip that all day and it’s a great natural detoxifier.  Getting out in the sun for some vitamin D is excellent for your body also.  You want to get as much of your body exposed as possible.  20 minutes or so when ever you can get out is good.  Everyone I check on blood work shows there Vitamin D to be deficient.

Take time to de-stress your mind and body.  Sleep is imperative in repairing your body.  I’ve got to get a good 8 hours a night.  I think young athletes need  even more sleep.  I know my son Riley needs a good 9 hours nightly.  The more you stress your mind-body the more sleep you need.

This field I feel is the most incredible facility in the state of Wisconsin.  What a great investment for our kids and our community.

Fixing knee pain

Knees have been a particular interest for me for ever since I had my first knee injury back in 1978.

At the young age of 16 I tore my right medial meniscus .

I remember not only the physical pain but the emotional distress of not being able to walk or do the normal things kids do.

I remember going down to Central Medical in St. Paul and seeing the Vikings doctor.  He checked my knee and said I had to have surgery.  That was a shocker and my first thing I thought was I hope this wasn’t going to ruin my sports career.

I rehabed it as best I could for what they did back then and 8 weeks later I was playing basketball.

2 years later I was just running down the court and went to catch a long pass and felt my whole right knee explode.

I knew at that moment something major happened and more than likely another surgery was needed.

This was prior to MRI’S, and they did not even know an ACL existed back in 1979.

Surgery was done again, tons of rehab completed, but my knee was still  unstable when I tried punt, play hoops or do daily activities.

I did everything I could but my career was cut short.  19 years of age and that was it.

I eventually had ACL repair which provided more stability, and has allowed for some better fucntion when I cross country ski.

Today after 4 knee surgeries I have much degenerative arthritis throughout my knee.

The reason I function fairly well with the knee is I do a lot of conditioning to keep my muscles around my knee, lower extremityes, gluts, and core strong. Adjsuting my spine and lower extremities helps keep my aligned, ARP, laser, and graston techniques work great also.

Stability is crucial.  I actually still do box jumps, kettle ball swings, one leg glut work, and a variety of strength exercises.  Speed and agility is also important.

If you have knee pain or chronic problems the worst thing you can do is sit home and do nothing.

You have to get out and move your body.

If you or a loved one has a knee issue that keeps you from enjoying life then an assessment by me is a good idea.  I’ve been through everything with knees and I know how to get people active again and keep them in the game of life.

The All-star game is upon us.  What a fantastic week for the Twin Cities.

I remember going to the first home run derby in 1985 at the Metrodome.  Dave Parker won it.  It wasn’t even televised back then and I think it was $10 to get in.  No the home run derby is bigger than the game and if you want a ticket you are going to have to pay $400.  Times have changed.

Growing up the all-star game was something I loved to watch every year.  It meant summer was 1/2 over.

Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Harmon Killerbrew, Robin Yount, Brooks Robinson, Vida Blue, Al Kaline, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Reggie Jackson, were all some of my favorites.

Baseball in the summer was my favorite sport.  There is just something about summer baseball.  I’m still playing after all these years.  Wednesday night at Oakey Park the Oakey Owls will be playing at 7pm.  Come on down and enjoy some summer fun.
