Turkey bowl 28 is in the books! State Champs 2015

It has been a crazy last month or so for me and my family.  I hope all of you had a incredible Thanksgiving day.  We had hte 28th annual Turkey bowl here in Osceola.  It was a lot of fun playing in a mini snowstorm.  We had 18 players who ranged from 8 years of age to 55.  Tommy Krenz, Terry Baillergeon and Kevin Rogers have done all of them which is remarkable.   Now we have kids and grand kids playing, how cool is that.  I tried to defend my son Riley who plays at D2 Concordia and he totally smoked me.  My mind says yes but the body says no.  I can’t believe how I’ve lost some of my quickness.  I was sore for a few days but no major injuries so that’s good news.

Talk about crazy fun stuff, how about those Osceola Chieftains football team winning the Wisconsin state football division 5 Championship.  This was an incredible team effort through out the entire year.  I’ve had the honor to work with some of these student athletes from the 5th grade up and it was such a highlight for me to see them shine this year.  What incredible memories we will all have who followed this Championship season.  I’ve got pics on my phone from the game but don’t know how to put them on my computer.  Check out the pic of Tucker Hazzard and some of the boys from their 5th grade football practice.

It has been a pleasure to be able to provide Chiropractic care to a whole bunch of these football players.  Whether it’s at the house or clinic I love being able to help these kids and keep them healthy and in the game.  We were fortunate to have no major injuries to any starters so that doesn’t happen very often.

I also had the pleasure to work with the Concordia football team in St. Paul where my son plays.  It started with just working on Riley since he was getting beat up pretty good in practice and next thing you know 1/2 the team was getting adjusted.  I worked on 67 of the 100 members of the team and even a few coaches before games.  These are college kids who really appreciated any help they could get and they really looked forward to the Tuesday night adjustment night.  Next thing you know a bunch would be coming up Sunday mornings to get worked on and Mary was cooking up a storm for the boys and they loved it.

It sure was fun working with a couple of the  Concordia captains to keep them playing when no one thought they could play.  The reason I do this is because I too was once a high school and college football and we didn’t have Chiropractic available like it is right now.  Having weekly and sometimes daily Chiropractic is what athletes need.  Sure wish I would have had it back in the day.  I’m hoping one of the athletes will go to Chiropractic school and come take over my practice when ever and if I ever to call it a career.

It’s been 25 years since…

Summer is at full force and I hope all of you are outside enjoying the incredible summer we are having.  Soon it will be fall and then winter so cherish the sunlight and get out and get your body moving.

One of the best things you can do for your brain is to get out and get some exercise.  The brain needs oxygen for fuel and there is nothing better than ramping the heart rate up a bit and getting oxygen to the brain.  You will  feelso much better.  Remember exercise is the best anti-depressant.

This past weekend I went up to Washburn Wi. to visit my old friends Dave Wilcox and his son Cam.  We did the firehouse 50 bike race which I haven’t done for 25 years.  It’s been 20 years since I’ve done a bike race so I wasn’t sure how it might go.

I started out way in the back in the 3rd wave and eased in to the race.  The main pack was already a 1/2 mile ahead of me after a couple miles.  Going up the great divide was really challenging.  I have only ridden 150 miles this summer and was wondering how my legs would hold up.

As I got over the great divide which seemed like a 3 mile hill climb I relaxed and was able to catch a group of racers which helps a ton.  I caught my buddy Willie at the 20 mile mark and was able to ride with him through the Chemomequon forest which was incredibly beautiful with rolling hills.  As we got to Drummond Wi. we had 8 miles to go.  I was really feeling it but made it to the finish line with just a little cramping.  My butt sure was sore and still is.

It was fun to do something different.  I can’t beleive I haven’t biked much over the last 20 years.  It sure is less pounding on the legs and is great for the heart when you start pushing the hills.  I probably won’t race much because you need to train for it and skiing is enough for me.  But to get outside and enjoy a nice ride with friends sure is fun.

Ok, here is what we are up to.  I’m holding a thyroid recovery workshop next Monday night the 10th at 6:30 at my offfice.  It’s an hour long, no charge.  If you suffer with a thyroid problem then this is a must attend class.

Football and fall sports are here.  The Chieftains should be really good this year.  I look forward to helping these athletes stay healthy and being able to compete at the optimal potential.

Challenges to change or opportunities for growth?

What an incredible nice summer we are having right now.  My plants took it on the chin last week when we got hail and holy cow did we get a soaking on monday.  I love the heat!  I love when it gets hot and humid in the summer.  I know how cold it can be when I’m skiing in the winter and freezing at a start of a cross country ski race so I appreciate all the sunlight I can get in and the heat.

Sometimes when I’m working with patients and shifting their paradigm about health, exercise, eating it can be challenging.  It’s kind of like the dog days of summer for people.  Change in diet, exercise can seem like an obstacle.  Lets look at the opportunities that taking charge of your health can bring for you.

Eating better.  I reccommend for everyone that I see to remove all inflammatory foods.  No gluten, dairy, soy, yeast to start.  Sometimes people cry when I say this.  It’s not that bad once you get going on it.  There are a ton of great foods you can eat like veggies, fruits, grass fed meats, etc.  If you do it it will change the quality of your life substantially in a short period of time.  If you really want to know exactly what you can and can’t eat we can run a array 10 food sensitvity panel from cyrex labs for $580  Check it out here. http://www.joincyrex.com/page/7781/Array-10-Multiple-Food-Immune-Reactivity-Screen

Brotherly love from 8 years ago.

There are so many toxins in food you really want to eat organic and keep anything processed to a minimum.  Everyone loves sweet corn this time of year.  As much as I used to eat a dozen ears at a sitting I can’t even tolerate one ear of corn these days.  It’s a big no-no for me.  I like the food sensitivity panels because I know exactly what my patients can or can not eat.  You are either adding fuel to the fire or putting the fire out with what you eat and how it effects your overall health and well being.

I like to get all my workouts done either first thing in the morning while my energy is highest, or at noon lunch.  I have always struggled with workouts at night.  If you don’t have much time do some fat burning exercises.  Pushups, planks, burbees, quick sprints.  Do 30 seconds on and 30  seconds off of these for 10 minutes and you are good to go.  The key is to just get the shoes on and get outside and start moving the body.  It may be getting a 10 minute walk in to start.   The benefits of moving greatly outweight the side effects of sitting and doing nothing.

Many patients struggle with sleeping problems.  Chronic stress can play a huge role in this.  One of the test I like to do is a adrenal stress index test which is a saliva test  which measures your cortisol levels which is a stress hormone at 4 different times of the day.  If you are in adrenal exhaustion or they are all over the place their are specific strategies you can do to help the adrenals heal and you can start sleeping better.  One of them is strict blood sugar control.  One of the biggest problems I see in practice is the poor blood sugr regulation of my patients.  This is crucial if you are ever going to have good energy and good sleep patterns.

The basic testing which people should have done is the 85 panel comprehensive blood work up for $199  It’s such a valuable test to have done.  It checks your 3 month blood sugar value, all your electrolytes, a fatty lipid profile, 10 different thyroid checks including your antibodies to see if you have Hashimoto’s thryoiditis, Vit D levels, a complete CBC with auto-differential to see if you have any viral or bacterial infections, and a urine analysis.  This is a must for everyone.  I get mine checked yearly.  If you did this on your own it would cost $1900  We contract through lab corp so we get a signifigant savings, you just have to run down to Edina for the blood draw.  Once we get the tests back we sit down and go over them and get a plan of attack to get you healthy.

30 days grain free for pain free.

One of the most important things you can do to get your health back is to clean up your diet.   This is a great time of the year than spring when it starts getting nice out and and you can get outside and start moving your body more after our winter hibernation time.

One of the best things you can do right now today is to drop all grains from your diet, period.  Grains are inflamamtory to your gut and body.  I can go into tons of detail why eliminating grains will help you be much healthier from your gut to better brain function to less back pain.  Just trust me on this one.  When people consult me this is one of the first things I advise patients.

Most people come in with Chronic health issues which are due in large part  to the standard american diet which has a ton of grains in it and processed grains.  The standard american diet or SAD is killing our society.  I just read a study put out by the government that by 2044 our country will be BANKRUPT because of the cost to manage diabetes.  That means we will be spending more for the managment and treatment of diabetes than all the taxes that go in to the pot.  That’s incredible!!!  It’s time right now to take charge of your health.  You can do it, my job is to lead you there.  There are common findings in all chronic diseases which I address and one of the biggest things you can do is getttting off all grains, even the gluten free grains.  Don’t believeve me, just try it for 30 days and see difference on how good you feel. One of the cool tests I’ve been reccommending is gene testing through 23 and me.  You can order the test on line and get it for $99 and then spend another $20 for interpretation.  I have patients bring this in and then I can interpret what needs to be done and how this will pertain to their specific health and what they can do now if their is some genes that may not be working right for them.  I also am having everyone who is serious about figuring out their health get a 85 comprehensive blood analysis for $199.  It tells me so much about how you are functioning.  I put it all together and get a plan of attack to get you fucntioning optimally. Reducing blood sugar and reducing inflammation is really key for most chronic health conditions. Getting your gut microbiome is crucial also for good overall health.  Good gut health important for blood sugar regulation and great brain health.  Removing any food sensitivities which gluten, dairy, egg, soy, and yeast are important.  I can test for these but just try going off these and see how you feel. OK, it’s time to jump start after this winter.  Get outside and get moving.  It will do wonders for your attitude and get good oxygen for the brain.

Bozeman or Bust.

It is very important to take time off from your daily routine and go out and adventure life.  While I’m pretty good at doing this, sometimes you need to just get away to appreciate all that you do have and get a fresh jump start to all the great opportunities that life has to offer.

Wednesday night I took off for Bozeman.  I picked up fellow Chiro Dave Leske and my nephew Matt Edling and off we were for the 13 hour and 1000 mile drive to Bozeman Montana.  We got there at 7am thursday morning and the sun was just coming up.. What a beuatiful scene it is at day break on the Bozeman pass from Livingston and into Bozeman. As tired as we all were the beauty of the Bridger mountains and Gallatin Valley gave us a rush of energy.  We checked into the Lewis and Clark motel in Bozeman and then off we were to Bohart ranch for some cross country skiing in the Bridger mountains.  Bohart ranch had the best groomed trails I have ever skied.  I sure wasn’t adapted to the elevation since the first hill I had to stop and catch my breathe.  I thought my heart was going to explode.  I knew I was in for a little challenge on Saturday when we were to race the Rendevoux x-ski race in West yellowstone which was at 6800 feet.

We had to hit the Bozeman hot springs which felt so good after a long drive and ski.  If you get out to Bozeman hit the hot springs.  Your body will feel so great going from the very hot springs to the cold springs.

Then we were off to see my son Connor who gave us a tour of the campus.  What a great campus and it was nice to see Connor coming into his own out there.

On friday we went to the Museum of the Rockies which had incredible dinasour exhibit and a history of the civil war exhibit.  You have to see that if you get out there too.  Then off we were to West Yellowstone to pick up our bibs and get settled down for the big race on saturday morning.

It was fun seeing people from all over the western states come to West Yellowstone for the  race.  This is kind of like our Birkie for them.  I met people from Pocatello Idaho, Salt Lake City, Truckee Ca, and even a skier drove out from Eau claire for the race.  Him and I were the only Wisconsin racers.

It was 25 degrees at the start of the race  and the course looked really fast.  It was a very competitive field and people were doing more racing than most races I race.  The gun went off and I took off at a decent pace but not going to hard.  Well 15 minutes later on the first big hill I couldn’t get my breathe and felt light headed.  I had to stop and let a group of people go by me as I tried to recover.  I knew I had to slow down and just pace my self and I did that.  The next big hill climb I was barely moving and I had to stop again.  This was what the whole first lap was like.  At the half way point I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make the whole 50k.  Well I relaxed and somehow got my wind and starting picking off people who passed me earlier like I was standing still.  With 2 k to go I passed a young woman skier who said I looked strong and to go get the other guy ahead of us which I did.  Later that night while we went to The Montana Ale Works in Bozeman for supper this same girl who I had past was now our greeter.  We laughed and gave each other a big hug.

Cross country skiing like any passion that you have gets the most out of you and you meet great people when you get out of your comfort zone and just go for it in life.  I encourage all of you to find something you like or would like to try and give it a shot.  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  The most rewarding thing about skiing is hte relationships you develop by meeting people and the sense of accomplishment when training and racing.  I have great friends in Dave and Matt and they were able to experience the best of Bozeman and we had a great time.  You too can do what ever you dream about.  This whole Bozeman road trip was jsut a split second idea I had the night before the Birkie and I’ll remember it fondly for the rest of my life

It was great to meet up with Scott and Amy Frischmon who own Wild Mountain.  They have a beautiful place on Big Sky spend a couple of hours after the race on our way back to Bozeman.  We also went to the Montana State-Montana mens basketball game Saturday nigth nd that was a lot of fun ecven though we were all pretty wiped out.

It’s back to helping all of you to my best ability.  I’ll be doing a lot of in office workshops so keep posted to emails and facebook as to what lecturees will be given and your ooportunity to attend and get your health back if you have lost it and keep it once you have it.

I’m a true believer in Birkie fever.

Well the Birkie is over and what a spectacular event it was.  The new bridge crossing highway 63 and mainstreeet was so cool.  My nephew Matt Edling who was doing his first Birkie rode up with me and the first thing we did after we got our bib was go to downtown Hayward and check the new bridge that we would ski over.  We were both amazed how steep it was and huge it was.  Skiers were practicing skiing up and down the bridge and it looked really fun.  The bridge had a 15% grade going up and 18% grade going down.  I could only imagine the slingshot effect it would give all us skiers as we headed down the last 200 meters hearing the screams of friends and fans for the last push of energy to the finish line.

I woke up at 5:40 am on Birkie race day knowing this is the best day of the year for me.  I slept like a baby and was ready to bring it.  Paleo breakfast and off Matt and I were to catch the buses to take us to the starting line at Telemark.  This is when it gets to be a cluster.  We parked at Birkie ridge and finally got on a bus.  I wasn’t sure if I’d make it on time but it was smooth sailing and got their a good 25 minutes before my race went off.  I saw Tommy Krenz and he looked determined as ever.  I was running into people who I only see once a year and Birkie fever was totally in the air.

The gun went off and off I went at 8:10 am.  A nice smooth start and snow flakes hitting all our bodies it was a winter wonderland out there.  13 degrees felt very refreshing until the 5 k mark and the hills started coming.  Now it was time to concentrate, keep relaxed, and stride up those hills with confidence.

Kevy Rogers who was doing his 35th Birkie passed me like I was standing still at the 7 k mark.  Of all the skiers out there Kevy has the best technique.  He looks effortless as he went on to place 100th overall.

More hills until OO which is the halfway point of the birkie.  I loaded up big time on whatever would fuel my body.  I was halfway home and would now have a little reprieve from the hills until I hit Mosquito brooke and the 39K club.

I was starting to feel depleted a couple K before Mosquito brooke and  thank God Frank Lundeen was there with Coke and goodies to help replenish my fatiguing muscles.  Mosquito brooke generally isn’t to bad for me but this year it hurt.  All the hills hurt the last 15 K.

There was a nice addition to the course which added 1 kilometer and it was through the fish hatchery trail system.  I loved it.  I sure didn’t love  the climb up Highway 77 which is the last hill.  It’s a kilometer long but when you get to the top you can see the water tower of Hayward and it made me feel like I’ve been gone from home for months and I’m finally getting back home.   Oh what a feeling it is to cross Wheeler road and onto the lake.  I didn’t stop for Yager shots like last year because I was drafting in a group of guys and it sure helped.  3 k across the lake and a right turn and there was the bridge.  It was really steep and I herring boned it as fast as I could and down the other side the crowd was cheering everyone on as we were shot like a canonball out of a canon and one last and furious double pole to the finish and the Birkie was completed.

I couldn’t bend over to get my ski’s off I was cramping so bad.  A volunteer helped me and off I was to get my 23rd Birkie pin and get some warm clothes on.

It was off to anglers for a well deserved  brat and beer and to cheer all the other racers on.

Congrats to all the skiers.  There is something about the Birkie which makes me feel the most alive I can be.

There is an energy about not only doing the Birkie, but cheering fellow skiers on.  My nephew Matt Edling who just started skiing in December did the Classic Birkie in 5 hours and 44 minutes. I’m very proud of him for taking  the challenge on.  His ski broke but he was able to ski it in so that was remarkable.

My training partners Dave Leske and Duane Lee have been very supportive and I thank them for them for all the great ski’s.  Dave got sick during the week and wasn’t able to ski.  It’s impossible to ski such a grueling coure if you are sick.  Duane was right behind me and we all had a great time.

Thanks to Carrie O’Connell for a great feed friday night and Audrey Yunker for letting us stay at her Cabin.  A big shout out to my wife Mary Flood who puts up with me the other 51 weeks a year. Congrats to all my patients who skied the Birkie!!  Thanks Duane for the fast ski’s, and team Cyclova rocks!

Now a little rest, and then it’s back at it for the next 51 weeks until next years Birkie.  If you want to really challenge yourself start training and maybe I’ll see you at the starting line of next years Birkie.  Anything is possible if you dream it and take some action.

How to gain 5 pounds over a weekend.

I would not reccommend this to anyone but I want to tell you a story of how I gained 5 pounds over a 72 hour time frame.

I left with my skiing buddies friday at 11am for the Noquomonen cross country ski race in Marquette Michigan.  It’s an incrediblely difficult race that starts in Ishpeming Michigan and goes through some incredible hilly terrain the first half of the race and finsihes all downhill right on the Northern Michigan university Superior Dome where they play football.

It’s an incredible race and is so difficult to do but very rewarding when you are doing it and especially when you are done and exhausted.

You may be thinking how can you gain 5 pounds after doing a 31 mile cross country ski race with head walls for hills while burning 7000 calories during the race?

When you do a long endurance even it not uncommon to lose weight initially after the race.  But most of us really hydrate and probably over eat before the race to feel our energy stores so we have enought to go full throttle during the race and hopefully not bonk or cramp up.

Doing this race is incredibly stressful on your body.  You are really spent and extremly tired after.  You need to hydrate and put food in your body big time after the race.

Your adrenal glands produce cortisol  which is a stress hormone and during a race like that it’s working hard.  To much cortisol release and your body will store fat.  That’s why people who are under a lot of physical or emotional stress have a tendency to gain weight.

The good news is after a few more days I’ll be back down as I let my body and mind recover from the race and will probably be a pound or two lighter by end of the week or the next race which is the Badger State games in Wausau this weekend.

I only do 4 or 5 races a year in the winter if we have enough snow and a handful of 5 k running races in the spring and summer.  I only want to have about 10 weeks out of the year where i lay it all on the line.  Now I spend the other 40 weeks a year training and preparing my body and mind to be in race shape.  The training period is hard work but it’s also the process that is a personal growth time for me and I love it.  The races are the icing on the cake and kind of a celebration of why one trains.

Start with getting your body moving and start getting your own personal training going.  Hire my buddy Mike Colaizy at the wild river fitness if you need some structure in your training, get a group of friends and go out and do your favorite activity, or get out and do it on your own.  The big thing is to have fun and be consistant in your workouts.  Add great nutrition and watch your life take off.  If you do a 5 k running race from time to time you need to make sure you train during the week.  You can’t eat like a king during the week for a 5 k.  You can do that on a cup of coffee.

Repair and clear your gut for good healing.

One of the most important priorities in delaing with people’s health or lack of health is to make sure they have good gut function.

Why is this so important?

Because, your gut has many many fucntions including 80% of your immune system lies right in the gut.  If you have poor gut health then you aren’t going to be healthy and you can have many other dysfunctions of the body becasue of poor gut health.

Digestion starts in your mouth and ends with a bowel movement.  It’s incredible the number of physiological processses that go on.  You have to produce enough hydrochloric acid in your stomach to breakdown your food.  Digestive enzymes must be released to break food down in the intestines, gall bladder and liver is activated during digestion, and a huge host of other activities that we do not have conscious control over but work their magic.

What can get in the way of good digestion is the food we eat.  It can either work for us in a positive way or against us.  Unfortunatly the standard American diet will totally work against your body and totally destroy your gut lining and can lead to many health conditions.  When you lose the integrity of your gut lining your food proteins aren’t digested and go into the blood stream not getting digested and your immune system sets up an attack since this is foreign and can cause a host of problems over time from allergies, to auto-immune condtions, to just plain old poor gut and bowel function.  I guess you could call this a leaky gut condtion.  When you have a leaky gut it must get healed.  I do specific strategies to heal your gut and get you back on the road to better health and well being. It’s imperative that you change you diet, manage your stress, and get some movement in your life.  One of the tests I do to assess gut and bowel activity is a stool microbial test.  It measures how much good bacteria you have in the gut and also measures bad gut bacteria, yeast and parasites which also can cause havoc and wreck your gut and lead to a chronic inflammatory state.  It’s not uncommon to find bad gut bacteria and parasitic infections on the blood work and then on the stool microbial tests.  This must be hadled and I do a prtotocol to fix this.

When you have a leaky gut you probably have a leaky brain which can lead to brain fog, fatigue, and just not feeling good.

Be very conscious about what you put in your mouth.  Stay away from anythnig that is boxed, canned, or processed.  Those along with grains and dairy are offending foods that will more than likely just add fuel to the fire.

The one thing you must never have is high fructose corn syrup.  This is poison!  It will kill your gut, spike your blood sugar, and make you fat and stupid.  Just say no to all sugary and diet pops.

Winter high school sports are well on their way.  Good luck to all the kids who are in extracurricular activites.  it keeps them in the game of life.

It’s been kind of fun checking out different colleges with my son Riley.  He hopes to play a little football also.

It’s great to have Connor back from Montana State for the holidays.  He’s a whiz with the computers which helps me out a ton.

Madison Or Bust

Well it was a whirlwind weekend for yours truly.  It started with the 26th annual turkey bowl.  It was our coldest turkey bowl ever.  2 degrees at the start and 4 at the finish.  It was a defensive battle and it came down to the last possession with the black team holding the red team for a 20-14 win.

Danny Steffen had a great game at quarterback.  Fellow Chiropractor and long time turkey bowl participant John Hilpisch had an outstanding game.  Dave Leske and Jason Ellingson had really good games for the red team, and it was sure nice to have my son Riley Edling showing off his youth and dominating us older fellows.

The Osceola football field with 2 inches of snow held up great.  It wasn’t really that slippery out there which was surprising.  I’ll be ready for next years turkey bowl.  Only a chip fracture of my ring finger this year, so no major injuries.

On friday Riley, Dave Leske, and myself road tripped down to Madison for the Badger Gopher football game.  It had been 10 years since I had been to a Badger game.  What an incredible festive day it was on saturday.  50 degrees and a perfect day for football game.  There was a ton of Gopher fans done there also since it was the biggest game for them since 1967.  The Gophers started well but the Badgers just wore them out in the end with that running game.  Look for the Badgers to whoop up  on the Buckeyes for the Big 10 championship this Saturday.  It won’t be 10 years until I get back to Madison.  You must experience a Badger game if you are any fan of football.  I hope the Gophers can some day create a similar energy the the Badgers pre game festivities are.

It’s December first and cyber monday.  So far so good with not buying anything on the internet on friday or today so far. Here is something I’d consider doing to improve your health over the holidays.  I’d stick to a well balanced diet and actually fuel your system with great organic foods.  Meat, chicken, fish, organic if you can.   Eat tons of veggies, and keep your fruits to low glycemic fruits like stone fruits or berries.  Don’t skip breakfast, have some protein first thing in the morning.  Make sure you hydrate. Exercise is crucial too.  I’m training hard for the Birkie right now so I’m doing some hours on the ski’s.  Start doing bodyweight exercises which are fat burning and accelerate and boost your metabolism.  5-10 minutes a day of those fat buring exercises and watch out, you will be on fire!! Pushups, jumping jacks, planks, squats, lunges, are jsut a few you can start with.  Do 30 seconds of these , take a 15 second break and do the next exercise.  Do 5 minutes of these and your set.   Get of the computer and do wall slides.  Just put your back up against the wall and slide your arms up and down and this will activate your back muscles and help with your posture.  Don’t forget to get sleep.  I’m in bed at 9 pm most nights.  My body needs 8-9 hours a night and an occasional cat nap also.  Sleep is when our brain and body recovers.

I’ve been seeing a lot of thyroid patients lately and it’s fun working with these challenging cases.  Most are auto-immune which means their own immune system is attacking the thyroid gland.  Medicine really doesn’t have much to offer to calm the immune responce down. There are usually a host of other chronic conditons going on also and sometimes these can be tricky cases.  everyone is different so the care plan must be individualized to get good results.  Healing does take time.  You have to give your mind and body a good chance to heal and stay the course.

Right now is a good time to be very aware of your diet and don’t go crazy with your eating.  Get out and move your body and keep living a healthy life.  The healthier you get the happier you will be.   It’s very easy to get depressed over the holidays so exercise is your best anti-depressant.

OK, go out and make it an incredible day.  Congrats to the Minnesota Gophers on an outstanding regular season.  I know the coaches and players must be a luttle burnt out this time of year.  They have some good time to recover and get prepped for their bowl game where ever that will be.  It’s nice to see them relevant again in the Big 10.

Staying the Course

Mary, Riley, and I got back late Sunday from our 4 day trip to Florida.  It was perfect weather and now look what we have.

I was frantically getting everything put away Sunday night and sure enough I thought I’d only miss a few minutes of the Packer game and it was already 35 to nothing when I got back inside.  I’m sure glad I got all my stuff done because it would have been a bit of a disaster trying to get the golf cart, basketball hoop, and lawnmower in on Monday morning.

I love the first snowfall.  It’s always a bit hard for me to sleep as I’m waiting best I can for the big snowfall to hit.  Is school going to be closed, will patients make it in, will my rear drive Cadillac make it to the clinic and back without getting stuck?  Those are just some of the thoughts that passed my mind.  Some other fun thoughts were “I hope we get enough snow so I can get the cross country ski’s out”.  Well we have enough snow that I’ll adventure out to Rock Creek Farm and try my luck for a few hours.  It should be beautiful out there.  Now I need to grow the big white beard so I don’t freeze my face.

I’ve put in quite a few hours rollerskiing to get and keep in shape so I can compete and finish my 24th Birkie.  It’s incredible how fast time has gone by since I started cross country skiing.  I did it on a whim not even knowing how to ski but I needed something to do if I was going to relocate back here from Arizona.  Well it has changed my life.  I’ve always been into fitness and x-skiing didn’t beat my body up.  It felt and still feels like it builds my mind and body up.  I go out on a day like today and it’s nothing but a positive experience.  Positive experiences are anti-inflammatory to the brain and body.  That’s why vacations even for a few days are good for you.  They get you to stop and smell the roses.  Your body and mind can get into a bit of a recovery mode and you can balance out physiology.  One thing I am going to start doing is taking breaks more periodically.  It’s just something we should all do if you can swing it.

I’ve been practicing Chiropractic and cross country skiing for 28 years.  There had been times where I was fed up with  both and could have just quit. I’m sure we all have times like that.  I stayed the course through thick and thin.  Kind of like marriage, kids, and anything that you really value.  I’m asking all of you to stay the course with your health.  For some of you it has taken years for you to lose your health.  It ‘s going to to take time to get it back.  Be patient with your healing process, especially if it’s radical changes with your diet and exercise routine.  These can be tough for some and while most see great progress in weeks to months, some take longer.  Everyone is different.  It will all pay off in the long time.  Some quit right when they are ready to start seeing results.  I guess it’s like anyting in life.  I always encourage all the athletes I’ve worked with over the past 35 years to stick it out.  Even my own kids at times have felt like quitting.  I even hated my freshman year at the U. of Minnesota while playing football and I was starting.  I just couldn’t take the stress.  A reassurring phone call from mom and dad made all the difference in the world.  If you need to pick up the phone and give me a hollar I’m here for you.  Stay the course of being healthier in every way you can and watch the quality of your life improve over time.

    I love the heat and hate the humidity. How about you? This reminds me of summer of 1977 and it was a scorcher. The St. Croix Falls golf course had no watering systems and it was totally burnt out except for the greens. We'd play golf early in the morning and then come home grab a snack and o
