Do you have numbness in hands or feet?

One of the most common complaints which people come in for is numbness or tingling in their hands or feet, sharp electric type of pain, cramping, pain when walking, difficulty sleeping from leg discomfort, prickling or tingling feelings.

This is not a good sign since it means your nerve cells or neurons are dying!

The typical treatment medically for this is a med called Neurontin.

Would you rather fix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?

One of the mot common causes of Peripheral Neuropathy(P.N.) is poor blood sugar regulation over years.

Pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, syndrome X, or diabetes is one of the most common causes of P.N.

It is imperative that your diet change big time in order for the blood sugar to come down.  You can take metformin or insulin but in many cases just hard core good nutrition can make a signifigant positive changes in blood sugar and eventually P.N.can be improved.

There are also a host of other strategies I use like vibration, adjusting, laser, ARP wave to turn those nerve cells on and wake them up.

Celebrating football win.

When you can’t feel your feet you can’t sense where your feet are in space and then you are more likely to fall and break a hip or injure yourself.  80% of people over 80 who break a hip are dead within a year.  Ususally you are in a nursing home after surgery for a hip and recovery can take months.

I’m passionate about working with people who have peripheral neuropathy because it runs in my family.  I have a huge history of diabetes and my dad had horrible neuropathy.  He’d scream at night the pain in his feet were so bad.

The ARP machine works great at getting the sensation back in the feet.  It also works part of the brain called your parietal lobe which helps sense where your feet are in space.

Another strategy for people who have peripheral neuropathy is they must go gluten free.  One of the most common problems with peopel with P.N. is an auto-immune issue where the immune system attacks the nerve cells and you start loosing feeling in your feet.  Gluten sensitivity is a major cause of this and other neuro-metabolic conditions.  Anyone with an auto-immune condition has to go gluten and dairy free.

It’s unbelievable how bad P.N. can be for people. I do a test called 2 point discrimination where you touch 1, 2, or 3 different areas on your lower leg.   You should be able to tell me how many fingers I am touching you. Boy, I tell you what, that would make me feel nervous if I couldn’t tell how many areas that someone is touching me in.  Dying nerves are not good.  If you have dying nerves you also have a brain that is degenerating.

Sometimes your meds can make your neuropathy worse.  One of the most common one’s statin drugs.  This lowers the amount of Co-Q 10  so you must be taking this supplement if on statins.  I’d rather look to the cause versus just treating effects.

Homecoming parade.

What a fun homecoming week it was here in Osceola.  The Chieftains beat up on a bigger Prescott team and won 36-0.  We ran outside and threw all night long.  This friday is at Durand.  We win and we wil be in playoffs!  Good luck to Meredith Nelson and the Osceola girls golf team as they have regionals today in Cumberland.

What you can do naturally for a head cold

This is the time of year where people start coming in for colds and flu symptoms.  One of the things I do not recommend is the flu shot.  It truly is a shot in the dark.

How about building your immune system up naturally?  What a novel idea.

Here are some simple things I recommend to build your immune system and be less sick during the change of seasons and winter.

1.  Avoid processed sugars. sugar is everywhere.  Let fruit and veggies be your source of sugar, simple as that.  Sugars stress the immune system big time in a negative way.  Kids eating sweets after Haloween get all kinds of colds and keep the dentist busy also.

2. Get sunlight.  It’s going to be a great week of weather.  Get out and get as much sun as you can.  Vitamin D is crucial for good immune health.  Most people are deficient in this.  I run a blood test to see where you are at so I know how much to give you,  then re-check after 60 days.

3.  Stay away from orange juice and making smoothies with tons of juices in them.  Fruit juices not good, they spike your insulin levels and this stresses your adrenal glands and pancreas out and immune system gets stressed.

4.  Get regular exercise.  This time of year people start getting ready to hibernate for 5 months.  Get out and enjoy the out doors 365 days a year.  You don’t have to kill your self with workouts but get the body moving.  I prefer quick 20 minute high intensity fat burning weight bearing exercises like planks, up downs, lunges, quick sprints.  You can find me at least 1 day a week doing sprints on the football field  Come join me.

5.  Get regular Chiropractic adjustments!  This is imperative.  In fact, studies have shown that people who get adjusted regularly have a 200% stronger immune system than people who do not get adjusted. I started getting adjusted when i was in college and it changed my life.  No more ear infections and colds are only if I train to much. and don’t manage my stress well.

6.  Add garlic to your cooking.  I love garlic, it’s great for immune health as is olive leaf extract and other herbs such as astralagus, echinacea,licorace extract, zinc, Vit. A, and Vitamin C.  I carry a product called X-Viromen which works great for colds.  Another product if you feel like you are getting sick is Nucleo-immune.  Take this the first sign of a sniffle or achy feel and it does wonders.

7.  Get sleep.  One of the biggest things I stress to patients and especially high school athletes is to get enough sleep.  Sleep is when your body recovers.  If you aren’t getting 8 hours then you are probably stressing your body more.  I have to get at least 8 hours.  I go to bed early and get up early.  I do a saliva test called an adrenal stress index test.  This measures a stress hormone called cortisol at 4 different times in a 24 hour period of time.  It’s a must have done test if you have any sleeping issues.  You can not get and stay healthy if you aren’t sleeping well.  It’s only $95 and is a great investment.

8.  Count your blessings.  We all have tough times, that’s just part of life.  Be grateful for all things that come your way.  Go out and make a difference in other peoples life, that’s one of the best ways to feel good about your life.

9.  Have fun and smile!!

10.  Mentor others with your God given talents.  This helps build confidence which is great for immune health.  We can’t do anything about yesterday, but we can do a ton today and tomorrow!  Go out and live life!!

Do this, not that.

Fall is officially here.  I love those early fall mornings when you wake up and can see the frost on the roof and see it on the ground.

It was a great weekend to get out and about with this great weather.  I did most of the 25 k trail run through Rock Creek saturday morning.  Boy, was that a challenge.  Those hills are brutal.  That one will really get the fitness level up there so I’ll be ready for snow which will be early this year according to the weather reports.

I’ve been studying functional medcine for the past 5 years and see a lot of people who have auto-immune issues like hashimoto’s thyroiditis, type 1.5 diabetes, MS, raynauds, RA, psoriasis, and many others to name just a few.  These are conditions where the immune system is over excited and out of balance and then it starts attacking a certain organ or system.

A lot of these conditions are caused by our lifestyle.  Poor nutrition, lack of exercise, and chronic stress can really aggravate  these conditions especially if you have a high stress in your life.

The average western lifestyle  of poor nutrition, which is full of inflammatory foods like wheat, potatoes, (these foods hard to digest and get to much small intestine overgrowth of yeast and leads to more auto-immunty).  Dairy, soy, and yeast are pro-inflamamtory foods also.

Thus it’s really important to clean your diet up.  Just knocking out gluten and dairy can really make you feel a lot better.  Give it a shot.  It’s not that hard.  Your joints will feel better, you’ll probably lose some weight, and your energy will improve.

The problem is we get trapped into a certain way of  eating and living and we don’t know how to get out of it.

It’s much harder to start from scratch with diet and lifestlye but you have to start somewhere.  Just taking the steps now versus waiting is really important.  Get the shoes on tie them up and get moving.  Get a protein based breakfast and eat periodically throughout the day.

Get sleep at night.  One of the biggest things I work with young athletes on is their diet and their sleep habits.  You have to get sleep in order to heal and help your immune system calm down and start getting a wellness approached lifetyle versus diseased state and building more disease in your life.

We all could use some detoxification  becasue to  their are so many bad chemicals we are exposed to.  How about we address creating healthier enviroments for our body?.  The good air we breathe, stay out of polluted areas.  That’s one of the reasons I love living up here.  I don’t especially care to drive  a lot.  I don’t like traffic,

Did you know 20% of all food americans consume is fast food.  Do you think that’s good beef?

Everything is GMO food which is a real problem.  This is brutal on your immune system.

Want less cancer, want less heart disease, want less disease?  Then start eating, moving, and thinking better.  I try my hardest to help inspire you and your loved ones to live a better lifestyle and keep your nervous system functioning optimally since it controls everything.

It’s possible.  But it starts with you.  You have to meet me halfway if you want to be healthier.

Heat, Humidity, and Cramps!

Boy it has been strange weather this past week. No sunshine for 4 days and high humidity.  Our Air Conditioner went out that cools the whole house and it was a stinker trying to sleep when you are dripping wet and irt’s 85 in the house and no breeze.  I can’t imagine how the people down south live without air conditioning.

I like the heat but I’m not a huge fan of humidity.

Make sure you hydrate and eat lots of good foods when it’s hot and humid out.  You should try to get 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water intake.  I’ve been preaching the the high school football team the importance of hydrating so they don’t cramp up.  You have to do it the whole week, not just gameday.  Sure enough, we had some cramping issues friday night.  Cramps are generally very preventable.  It all comes down to nutrition and hydration.  If you skip breakfast, have a coffee and hit the road then you are more than likely going to have some cramping issues if you are active outside.  I remember one Birkie I cramped so severely I had to get an I.V. afterwards.  I couldn’t walk.  That was 15 years ago and haven’t had an issue with them since.  I used to fear getting cramps in my quads or calfs with 10 km to go in the Birkie but now I may get a slight one near the finish line or after.  They are really painful.  Football seems to bring the cramps out in everyone.  Drink, and eat mineral filled foods like veggies and fruits.  I use Magnesium and pink salt for those that have a tendency to get cramps if normal hydration doesn’t seem to do the trick.

The Chieftains had their first football game friday night and beat my alma mater handily 36-0.  We just had to much speed and size for the Saints.  It was fun to see a great crowd and I saw my old football coach Keith O’Donnell and old basketball coach Ron Greenquist on the sidelines.  They are both Wisconsin Hall of fame football coaches and were really great coaches and fantastic people.

I tell my son Riley to listen to his coaches.  They have pearls of wisdom not only about football but life.  That’s one of the coolest thigns about sports is it’s a lot like life.  You have highs and you have lows.  You generally aren’t at either extreme to long so just hang in there and work hard and good things will happen.    We all have challenges.  That’s life.  If you have a health issue that’s where I come in to play.  While I don’t have all the answers, I will do whatever I can do assist you in your health and well-being so you can live a substationally better quality of life.

What do Acorns have in common with your health?

Another fast summer week and it just seems to go faster and faster.  School is fast approaching and the sumac is already changed.  Every year it just goes faster and faster.  The only thing that seems to go slow is the NFL pre-season.  To me that seems like the longest 6 weeks ever.  Lets just get to the first real game.

Yes it’s true, the Acorns are falling.  I sat and watched 3 squirrels pick up 50 or so acorns yesterday afternoon.  They are already storing food for the winter.  No carbs in the nuts.  That’s a great source of energy that will have lasting power for them to get through the winter.  We Americans eat way to many carbs which only last a short period of time.  If we don’t use them then our body converts it to the bad form of fat and will really screw with your physiology.  Keep putting good things in and good things will come back out for you.  Be patient when you want to make changes with your health.  Keep the discipline and stick to the process of eating, moving, and thinking better.

Boy, my leaves are turning.

As I was in amazement watching the squirrels yesterday eat those acorns it is amazing how one acorn can eventually grow to be a giant oak tree.  I went up and pushed the oak tree and gave it a big hug.  it will probably live longer than me and it’s probably already 70 years old or so.  That tree needed plenty of sunlight and water to nuture it and make it grow to a 60 foot tree.  What would have happened if the tree didn’t get enough sunlight or water?  It would probably just die in time.  The same with our body.  It needs good water, good food, good fresh air, goood sunlight, and we need to be nurtured.  If we don’t get these we end up eventually and probably prematurely getting some form of sickness or disease that takes us from living the life we want to.

Being healthy doesn’t have to be that hard.  We just have to get out of the way of all the intereference we create for ourselves.

Ok, Osceola Chieftains have their first football game friday night against my alma mater, St. Croix Falls.  I think we will be pretty tough and competitive in our conference.  The boys seem to get along well and they work hard.

Make sure you keep hydrated daily.  You should try to get 1/2 your body weight in ounces.  It’s going to get hot by the end of the week so it’s not jsut the athletes that need to hydrate.

What’s the best diet for weight loss?

I was just asked this question a few hours ago and thought it is an appropriate question for most people since if one is asking it I’m sure their are others.

Here is the best way to lose weight.

Cut the carbs and eat more good sources of fat!

The bad carbs are anyhting that is processed, and high fructose corn syrup is the #1 worst carb for you.  It throws your blood sugar in disarray and will add weight to you big time.

You want to add fats to your diet.  These will leave you feeling full and cut any of the sugar cravings.

Enjoy the beauty of summer.

Here are some of the good sources of fats.

Avocado’s.

Coconut oil, coconut milk.

Olive oils,

Fish oils,

Organic grass fed beef, chicken, and fish are excellent source of fats and proteins.

Start your breakfast out with these types of good fats and add some veggies for breakfast, it’ not that hard to do.  Doing this will help decrease the stress on your adrenal glands which play a huge role in losing weight and being healthy.  If your adrenals are stressed you won’t lose weight so you need to heal your adrenals.

Chronic stress over time is what throws the adrenals and other hormones off and gives you that bloaty belly fat around your waist which will leave you frustrated and fatigued.

Snacks between meals ok.  Just have some protein with your meals and don’t be afraid to add veggies.

Don’t over do it on fruits.  You need to add fat and proteins.  Keep your fruit to berries and stone fruits which are fruits with pits in them.  Examples are peaches and cherries which are great this summer.

So what’s missing?  Gluten(grains), dairy, soy, egg, and yeast.  These are all inflammatory foods which are hard on your gut and immune system and can dysregulate your blood sugar also.

An anti-inflammatory diet is the way to go.

You will feel much better, control the cravings and with time as your body changes you will lose weight.

This anti-inflammatory diet is excellent for detox pathways also.

OK, high school sports start today.  I always say a prayer for the coaches, student athletes, and parents.  Sports are incredible for kids since it can change their lives in so many positive ways.  It teaches team building, and these kids can be role models for younger kids and other high school kids.

Extracurricular activites are wonderful for kids.  They are also great for parents since we get to cheer our children.  Coaches are dedicated to these kids and always are looking out for the best interest with our kids.

It’s going to be a fun season and I can’t wait for the first games ot start.

This is Mary and myslef’s last season of high school for our son Riley.  It’s really kind of bitter sweet.  I’ll be sad when it’s done but that’s life.  You just have to move forward to the next adventure.

If you can get out and cheer these kids on they will truly appreciate it and you’ll probably enjoy yourself.

OK, it’s already August!  Wow, summer is flying fast.  The braves played there last home game friday night.  good luck to the Bravees and the St. Croix River Bandits who start baseball playoffs this weekend.

Rileys last season of H.S. football

The Last Camp

This past weekend was the last camp Mary and I will ever bring our son Rileyto.  What a fun filled process it has been.  It seems like we just started all the camps and activities with our kids and now Riley is a week away from his last football season and his senior year.

We were down at the Jeff Trickey-Randy Wright football camp for Quarterbacks and Receivers.  It was an outstanding camp and they really worked the boys on technique.  The best thing I liked about the camp was the emphasis on being a leader and having and building your character.

As parents we are always preaching that to our kids but it was great to have the kids hear it from someone else.  These camps have priceless pearls of wisdom not only on football but on life.  That’s what I love about sports.  It’s a lot like life.  You will have many ups and downs. It’s about not looking back but staying in the movement and moving forward with each and every day.

The discipline sports demand are something I think are so valuable for our kids.  As adults it would be nice to have camps that trained your body and mind like these sports camps.  I guess we are kind of on our own to make it happen. I’ve been to many camps myself as a kid and watching my kids at camps and it’s interesting how focused and driven these kids were.  They were so attentive, worked their tails off, and were all very respectful.  Some of it may be because they were mostly juniors and seniors in high school and were more mature, but also these young athletes are looking toward bettering themselves with the hope of playing college football.

This camp was on the facilities at Coe College in Cedar Rapids Iowa.  What a beautiful campus.  Cedar Rapids seems to be an industrial blue collar type of city.  It’s interesting to see how many private small colleges there are in Iowa.  I’ve only been through Iowa a handful of times but there are some beautiful areas.  The corn must be 8 feet tall right now!!

One of the things they emphasised at the camp was the importance of getting enough sleep.  I’ve been preaching good nutrtion and good sleep  for years for the athletes I work with and all my patients.  This is when your body recovers, your brain recharges, and your hormones get balanced out and get you ready for a new day.  If you aren’t geting enough sleep you sare stressing your brain, your adrenals and will create a breakdown in your body-mind.  You will be more likely to get injured and not be able to compete like you want or lose weight like you may want to or just be healthy like you should be.  If you have a chance for a nap go ahead and take one too.

I want to share what I do in the morning for breakfast.  What I like to do on M,W, and fridays is get my nutra-bullet out and put all my supplements in there with a scoop of either clearvite which is a rice based protein powder or sometimes I’ll do the whey based protein.  I then add my favorite fruit, ususally a handful of blue berries, a scoop of greens or a handfull of blueberries and let the nutra bullet do it’s thing. You can add some coconut oil in there also, just a teaspoon and this helps emulsify your greens and allows for better absorbtion of your vitamins and minerals.  Try some spinach or kale leaves or kale leaves also.

Another great smootie I love is a handful of ice with 6 ounces water, add 4 ounces coconut milk, and one avocado and mix in nutrabullet.  Try it, I’m sure you will love it!!  It’s called a shamrock shake and it’s yummy yummy!!

I also like to do a quick 4 minutes of weight bearing exercises to stimulate my fat burning metabolism and then follow it with a shake. It’s very simple and easy great way to start your day.

Remember to not focus on yesterday but rather to stay in the moment of today.  Do this with how you eat, think, and move and you’ll be way ahead of the game called life.

It doesn’t get much better.

Summer is really the time of the year I enjoy because of the weather.  We folk up here love our four seasons and although we may bitch about the winter and the extremem cold we are very proud of our winters.  This past weekend was one of those remarkable summer weekends you can look back on when it’s 20 below in the winter.

I went down to the North South Shrine All-Star foootball game Saturday in Oshkosh to watch two of my patients play for the North team.  Mark Johnson from Osceola and Travis Shackelton from Baldwin Woodville played.  They both had outstanding games.  I’m very proud of them.  Mark will be going to UWRF and Travis to Stout to go to school and play football.

It was 34 years ago since I played in that game and I hadn’t been over there since then.  Interesting how some things had changed while others hadn’t changed a bit.  The campus is quite nice.  It’s a long drive to Oshkosh and back but it allowed Tucker Hazzard and I to visit two different campuses.  We stopped at UW-Stevens Point which is a very nice enviromentally friendly campus.  It had been 35 years since I’ve been to that campus and I was impressed  how clean and friendly it was.  I think the UW system is an excellent choice for our young graduating high school students to attend one of these fine institutions.

Summer is halfway done.  We are just a little over 30 days from the first high school football game, the NFL camps start this week.  It’s my favorite time of the year when football comes around.  I’m going to enjoy the hot weather for now but my favorite season is the fall when temps are perfect to workout in and the feel of football in the air is what I love.

Good  idea to get your kids in for a good spine and extremity check up before the fall sports start.  Once they start they put a lot on load on these kids and sometimes their bodies start breaking down.  Adjustments help decrease the load and allow for better recovery.  I’ve helped keep a lot of athletes going over the years and I love working with these kids in keeping them on the field.  Symptoms are generally the last thing to come on and if you can see a dysfunctional movement pattern or a restriction in joint motion and catch it early you can prevent a lot problems from developing down the road.

Remember to keep the diet clean.  A anti-inflammatory diet consisting of tons of vegtables, good fruits, and organic beef, chicken or fish is excellent.  I love adding coconut oil to the diet also.  Good fats are crucial for your body.  Fats like avocados are great.  Try one in a smoothie, it’s fantastic.  Another thing we do at home is have a big glass container of a gallon water, and then we cut up a bunch of limes and put in there with just a little teaspoon of grade A organic maple syrup for flavoring.  Just sip that all day and it’s a great natural detoxifier.  Getting out in the sun for some vitamin D is excellent for your body also.  You want to get as much of your body exposed as possible.  20 minutes or so when ever you can get out is good.  Everyone I check on blood work shows there Vitamin D to be deficient.

Take time to de-stress your mind and body.  Sleep is imperative in repairing your body.  I’ve got to get a good 8 hours a night.  I think young athletes need  even more sleep.  I know my son Riley needs a good 9 hours nightly.  The more you stress your mind-body the more sleep you need.

Are you in need of a makeover?

Good morning, the sun is shining, the rain has stopped for now and it’s all good!!   I hope all of you are having a incredible summer and are getting outside and enjoying the summer outdoors.

I’ve been working hard at cleaning and working around the house as we haven’t done anything in the 18 years of living here in Osceola.  I finally finished painting the deck and 200 spindels later I was happy to get that done.  I told Mary that’s the last deck I ever paint.  From here on out I’m going to do a little maintence yearly around the house.

Not being a painter I had no idea how detailed orientated and time consuming it was going to be.  I would be out there by 6 am and it was so quiet and peaceful.  You can do a lot of thinking while you are painting.  The end result is that it really needed a makeover and now looks like a new one.

Sometimes we need a makeover with our body and mind.  Some may haven’t done much for years and years and need a complete makeover, and some just need a touch up.  Trust me, the touch up is much easier then the complete.  That’s why I always recommend coming in for periodic check ups fo ryour spine and nervous system since I can catch things before they get symptomatic, you will feel great and like a car you don’t want to wait until the red lights come on.  I’ve been getting adjusted weekly for the last 35 years and it helps me be a better athlete, keeps me still competing, helps me sleep better, helps me manage my stress better, and generally helps my overall outlook on life.

I’ve had a few episodes in my life where I’ve neglected my body and sometimes stuff just happens and then I needed the complete makeover.  My first bad disc was when I turned 40 and that was pure hell. Felt like I was doing everything right but all the adjustments I give over the years finally caught up to me.  I wish I would have had the spinal decompression machine I have now.  That works like a charm for back and neck issues.

Now if you or a loved one has some kind of a chronic condition that developed over years it’s going to take in all aspects of your life to get you where you need to be.  You have to eat different to help the metabolic side of your condition, you have to move better to support the structural and functional side of your body, and you have to basically get a new paradigm on how you think or else nothing will change.  Change and compliancy to a new way of living can be really hard but people do it and have great success.  I’ll be posting a video on my you tube and facebook channel today of a patient who has lost 45 pounds since February first.  It’s so cool to see her get healthy and see her life change in such a positive way.

What a fun filled inspiring weekend I had.

Mary and I went down to watch Riley in the state boys track tournament.

What an incredible venue they have at UW-Lacrosse.  It holds a good 10,000 and is state of the art new facility.

I had never been to a state track meet and it totally exceeded any expectations I had.  The energy was electric.  Watching the kids race was so exciting.  You couldn’t help but feel a little tear of inspriration as they gave it their best shot.

The one thing I love about athletics is the energy it produces.  Riley’s 4×100 didn’t make finals but they had a personal best.  A little better handoffs and they easily make the finals.  That’s why you race the race because you never know what will happen.  Those short relays it’s all about the handoffs.

You can practice practice and practice but when it comes to the race you just about have to have perfect handoffs. Look for the 4×100 to make finals next year.

Our girls team had some great performances.  Mickey Gearin got 2nd in the pole vault.  Our 4×800 took 5th with a personal record of more than 15 seconds.  Savanah Rivard placed in the 400.  How about Mackenzie Fortier who had personal best in the mile and 2 mile.

Aimmee-Rice-Strand the defending state champ in the 200 meter run had a bad quad pull which bothered her all season.  She toughened it out and participated in the 100.  Congrats to her on an incredible career.  Look for her to do outstanding things at North Dakota State University next year.  Our other seniors had great careers including Mackenzie Fortier and Shelby Miller who be participating in track at Winona State next year.  Shelby Tyrell is going to Stout and had a fine career at OHS.

If you ever get a chance to go to the state track meet just go.   You will leave feeling totally inspired and have much hope for our young student athletes.

Our weight losss is going great.  Just had a patient who I haven’t seen in 6 weeks and she lost another 7 pounds.
